Reader’s Question:

What is an SR22 auto insurance in Indiana and how much coverage am I required to get?

Arnold

Indianapolis IN

In Indiana, an SR22 auto insurance is a required insurance coverage specifically for high risk drivers. It is required by law that any motorist needs to carry at least the minimum amount of liability insurance required in the state. For those who have had their licenses suspended, due to major violations such as DUI/DWI or driving uninsured, an additional requirement is added in the form of the SR22 car insurance. This type of form has to be filed every month with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles by your auto insurance carrier. Failure to file this form when mandated, will have your license suspended. An SR22 auto insurance in Indiana is required to be maintained for three years after the date of the initial suspension.

As for the insurance requirements involved with SR22 insurance, it is the same as what is required of any drivers in Indiana. The following are the minimum liability requirements:

  • at least $25,000 worth liability coverage for bodily injury to 1 person.
  • at least $50,000 worth liability coverage for all bodily injuries.
  • at least $10,000 worth liability coverage for property damage.

Car insurance companies suggest you get more than that.

How SR22 Insurance Works in Indiana?

Reader’s Question:

How does SR-22 insurance work here in Indiana, and how many points do I get for an OWI?

Bart

South Bend, IN

It is under the provisions of the law there in Indiana that a motorist may be subjected to chemical test to see the amount of alcohol in his blood if stopped and suspected by a traffic enforcement officer of OWI (operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated). In the event that a motorist is proven to be driving while intoxicated (this just means that the amount of alcohol in the blood of the motorist exceeds the legal limit), corresponding actions shall be taken against the motorist because in the state of Indiana, as anywhere else, this is a criminal offense.

To answer your first question, SR-22 insurance is the form of insurance that the state of Indiana utilizes in order to monitor the insurance of motorists that have had any problems – in this case, OWI-with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles there. This is also called financial responsibility insurance because this is what a motorist shows to prove that he has the state’s required minimum vehicle insurance policy. Typically, an SR-22 form is submitted to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles through an accredited vehicle insurance company that has a power of attorney on file.

Now, for your other question, according to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, an Operating While Intoxicated offense is marked eight points in your driving record, and this will remain in your driver’s license for two years from the date of conviction.

I hope I answered your question.

Adding a Vehicle in your Car Insurance Policy

Reader’s Question:

Is it legal for someone to put a friend’s car on their auto insurance when they do not own the vehicle and it does not reside at their house? My cousin is doing this in Muncie, Indiana and I think its a bad idea.

Don

Muncie, IN

Yes you are right. It is a bad idea a lot of reasons. If the insurance carrier is not notified of who the real vehicle owner and main driver is, presumably the friend, then the person obtaining an insurance policy in this manner could in fact be illegal. Without your cousin having insurable interest in the car it may difficult for your cousin to insure the friend’s vehicle anyway.

In many states, such as Indiana, putting a vehicle on your insurance policy in order to save money in this manner could be considered insurance fraud. It would be misrepresenting the information to say that the vehicle was his and residing at his house if it really is his friends and is garaged at his friend’s house. His friend’s driving history should be part of the rating process since he is the owner of the car and driver in Muncie, IN.

Difference Between SR22 and SR50 Insurance

Reader’s Question:

Is there a difference between an SR22 and SR50 form in Indiana?

Jenny

South Bend, IN

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, an SR-50 is a form used by an individual to show proof of current car insurance. This SR50 shows both the beginning and end dates of the current policy to the Bureau.

Therefore the definition of the SR 50 is a form required by Indiana (and probably in some states) as proof that one currently has insurance on their car.

If an individual is not insured at the time of a infraction, a reinstatement fee of between $150 to $300 is needed and they may be subject to a 1 year suspension of their driving privileges and will be required to have an Affidavit of Current Insurance, or SR-50 form, filled out and returned to the Indiana BMV by their insurance provider.

An SR 22 is proof of financial responsibility in Indiana. An SR-22 is mandatory three (3) year period if you are required to carry this certificate of Financial Responsibility Certificate .An SR 50 on the other hand is proof of current financial responsibility that your insurance company would send to the state.

Why my SR22 Insurance Rates are High

Q: My rates for Indianapolis SR22 are rising every year, and I haven’t changed a thing. Why is this?

A: One reason why Indianapolis SR22 insurance rates rise is because of the proliferation of fraud in car insurance claims. When fraud is commited more often, companies lose money and have to pass the buck on to the customer in the form of higher rates. Aside from searching for another company which has lower rates, the only thing you can do about this is do your best to make sure you aren’t a victim of fraud yourself.

One way fraud is often commited is by tricking Indianapolis SR22 policy holders into causing an accident, such as when someone who has the right of way at a stop sign signals you forward, and then drives forward themselves. In order to avoid this, you should drive defensively. Keep an eye on the cars around you, take it slow and cautiously, and keep a good distance behind other cars.

Another way fraud is often committed is in the mechanic shop. If you’re car is getting repaired, clear what repairs will be done with the mechanics ahead of time, and request an itemized bill for yourself afterwards.

Where to Insurance Companies that will Insure me with SR22 Insurance

Q: I’ve been to three companies so far looking for Bloomington Indiana SR22 insurance, and all three have turned me down. I’ve never had this problem before. How am I supposed to unsuspend my license if nobody wants to sell me car insurance?

A: First time purchasers of SR22 insurance often find it difficult to find a company that will insure hem. One of the reasons for this is that people who must file he SR22 form are extremely high risk, and many companies are not willing to assume that kind of risk.

However, many companies are. Start looking for companies which advertise themselves as high risk. Such companies charge more, but they’re also used to dealing with high risk drivers, and you’ll find it very hard to get turned down if you go to one of them.

Not to say it isn’t possible to get turned down for SR22 insurance by a high risk specialist company. Such things do occasionally happen, usually to people who were high risk before their SR22s. If this is the case, instead join the Indiana assigned risk pool, where you will definitely be insured with a random assigned company, but it will cost you.

Does my SR22 Insurance Provide Full Coverage?

Q: I’m financing my car and have full coverage. Is this the amount of coverage I have to have on my Gary IN SR22?

A: While you can drop your full coverage to the minimum and still meet the requirements of your Gary IN SR22 insurance, you have to think about the fact that your financier requires you to have the collision, comprehensive, and gap coverage. If you do drop it, then your car can get repossessed. Coverages that are required for someone who is buying a car include property damage liability, bodily injury liability, comprehensive coverage, collision coverage, and gap insurance.

Even with all of these additional coverages, you can still find ways to save money on your Gary IN SR22 insurance. If you assume more risk–and vow at the same time to be very, very careful on the road-then you can see your car insurance rates plummet. In order to assume more risk, you have to raise the deductibles on your exrta coverages. If you have, say, a $1000 deducible and you get into a car accident involving your car and a tree, you will have to pay the first thousand dollars of damages, and then your car insurance company will take care of the rest. Raising it as high as you can go is best, but make sure you can handle the costs of the deductible.

Q: What is Indiana SR22 insurance and what kind of coverage am I required to have for it?

A: Indiana SR22 is mandatory insurance coverage combined with monthly insurance verification. While it is already required by law that everyone who drives carry at least a minimum amount of liability insurance, for those who have had their licenses suspended, an additional requirement is added in the form of the SR22, which is a form which has to be filed every month with the Department of Motor Vehicles by your car insurance company. If not filed, then your license will be suspended. Indiana SR22 is required for three years after the date of the initial suspension.

As for the insurance requirements involved with Indiana SR22, they are otherwise no different than what is required of any Indiana driver. If you have insurance, the minimum amount you can have and still meet the law’s requirements are twenty five thousand dollars of bodily injury per person with a maximum of fifty thousand per accident, and fifteen thousand dollars for property damage coverage. Car insurance companies suggest you get more than that.

Q: My teenage daughter has to get Indianapolis SR22 insurance. How can I get this cheaply?

A: You’re never going to get cheap teen car insurance or cheap Indianapolis IN SR22 insurance, so it’s best to stop thinking of it in those terms. You can, however, get the cheapest of those insurance types available, and I’ll give you a few tips on how to do that.

First of all, since your daughter’s a teenager and thus likely to be still in school, you should check with your Indianapolis IN SR22 car insurance company to see if they offer the good student discount, and what the requirements are if they do. Standard requirements for this include a minimum age of 16, a B average or above in school, or a 3.5 grade point average, as well as status as a full time student. May vary among companies.

Also, be sure that your daughter is taking a driver’s ed class. Not only will this help her when she gets out on the road, but most car insurance companies also will apply a discount to your Indianapolis IN SR22 insurance if she does this.
