Reader’s Question:

What is an SR22 auto insurance in Indiana and how much coverage am I required to get?

Arnold

Indianapolis IN

In Indiana, an SR22 auto insurance is a required insurance coverage specifically for high risk drivers. It is required by law that any motorist needs to carry at least the minimum amount of liability insurance required in the state. For those who have had their licenses suspended, due to major violations such as DUI/DWI or driving uninsured, an additional requirement is added in the form of the SR22 car insurance. This type of form has to be filed every month with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles by your auto insurance carrier. Failure to file this form when mandated, will have your license suspended. An SR22 auto insurance in Indiana is required to be maintained for three years after the date of the initial suspension.

As for the insurance requirements involved with SR22 insurance, it is the same as what is required of any drivers in Indiana. The following are the minimum liability requirements:

at least $25,000 worth liability coverage for bodily injury to 1 person.

at least $50,000 worth liability coverage for all bodily injuries.

at least $10,000 worth liability coverage for property damage.

Car insurance companies suggest you get more than that.

Reader’s Question:

My brother has a record of drunk driving and until now he hasn’t included SR22 Filing in his insurance though many car insurance brokers have been calling him to include SR22 in his insurance. Are these car insurance useful and are they right regarding SR22 here in Indiana?

Ashley

Fort Wayne, IN

Car insurance brokers are not useless at all; they are somehow what we call our angels for they look for good car insurance company and car insurance coverage that best fit you. You don’t have to go around shopping for coverage and researching what is SR22 all about for they will give you the necessary information you need. Put this in mind, car insurance brokers won’t give you an advice about SR22 if you don’t have a record since this kind of accident would most likely to happen again.

Having a car insurance broker doing the boring job in your behalf is a good thing, you don’t need to be the one searching for coverage and comparing. Doing this takes a lot of time for you are going to determine how much you would pay for your car insurance. Determining how much you should pay for your car insurance in Indiana is not that simple for you have to know and understand well how to make your car insurance lower. A car insurance broker knows ways on how to cut down the cost of your car insurance premiums which is offering a higher excess and with this you will be able to pay less each year for your car insurance. Your car insurance broker will know every way on how to make your premium lower as well as the car insurance coverage that best fits you.

Reader’s Question:

It’s my first time purchasing car insurance here in Indiana. Any advice on how to find a reliable car insurance company?

Jake

Evansville, IN

Don’t worry, Jake, there are many insurance companies there in Indiana that offer car insurance for first-timers like you. There are certain things to consider when you’re hunting for a good car insurance company. The first and easiest way to get started is through the Internet. Try shopping online for more information and also to get free quotes for your car insurance. That way, you can easily compare car insurance rates from different companies. It’s very convenient, fast and economical.

Then, if you’re still unsatisfied by the information you have gathered on the Net, you can call your local insurance agent there in Indiana. Try asking your friends or your relatives about a reliable insurance agent. Through an agent, you will be able to ask for details regarding premium rates and coverages, so you can then compare them to other car insurance offers. But if you don’t want to go through an agent, there are also companies that offer car insurance directly to people like you.

Just remember to be honest about the information you put in your profile for it can affect certain rates or coverages. And if you want to save up on your car insurance, make sure that you have a clean driving record because traffic violations will affect your premiums. Most car insurance companies will also give you a discount if you already bought other insurance policies from them like a home or a life insurance.

Try also to consider the company’s financial stability as well as their standards in terms of customer care. Having a financially stable company is very important especially when you’re filing car insurance claims after getting into an accident.

Don’t forget to exhaust all your options, so you can better decide on the perfect car insurance policy for you.

Reader’s Question:

How does SR-22 insurance work here in Indiana, and how many points do I get for an OWI?

Bart

South Bend, IN

It is under the provisions of the law there in Indiana that a motorist may be subjected to chemical test to see the amount of alcohol in his blood if stopped and suspected by a traffic enforcement officer of OWI (operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated). In the event that a motorist is proven to be driving while intoxicated (this just means that the amount of alcohol in the blood of the motorist exceeds the legal limit), corresponding actions shall be taken against the motorist because in the state of Indiana, as anywhere else, this is a criminal offense.

To answer your first question, SR-22 insurance is the form of insurance that the state of Indiana utilizes in order to monitor the insurance of motorists that have had any problems – in this case, OWI-with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles there. This is also called financial responsibility insurance because this is what a motorist shows to prove that he has the state’s required minimum vehicle insurance policy. Typically, an SR-22 form is submitted to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles through an accredited vehicle insurance company that has a power of attorney on file.

Now, for your other question, according to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, an Operating While Intoxicated offense is marked eight points in your driving record, and this will remain in your driver’s license for two years from the date of conviction.

I hope I answered your question.

Reader’s Question:

I have a friend here in Fort Wayne, Indiana , who told me that I may be able to get some discounts on auto insurance if I don’t use my car that frequently. Is that true? Because most of the time, I just walk or commute to work, and I just use my car when I really need it.

Joshua

Fort Wayne, IN

Usually, there are different auto insurance policy laws for different states here in the country, but in the case of public transit users, I think it’s the same almost everywhere. And I’m sure the same thing is in effect there in Fort Wayne, Indiana. For you who do not really use your car that often and just commute through public transit or whatever, I’m sure that discounts are available because if a car insurance underwriter considers different factors, how frequent you use your car is going to be one of them. That is if you can prove to the auto insurance company that you actually use public transit. If you can, then you will definitely get a lower premium. The reason behind all of this is that a car insurance underwriter calculates how often you will probably be getting claims from them. Remember that when you get claims, the company loses money. If you do this a lot, there is a very high chance that the next time you have your policy renewed, either the company gives you a higher premium or the company rejects you. For those people that receive higher priced premiums, what they do is they commute and refrain from using their cars because this way, they can reduce the price of their premiums. If the car insurance company knows that you do not use your car that often, they would be open to giving you discounts. So, there you go now, and I hope I answered your question. Well, if you think about it, you would actually save more if you don’t use your car that often.

Do I have to have auto insurance on a vehicle in Terre Haute even if I do not use it? What are the auto insurance laws in Indiana?

Jean

Terre Haute, IN

Normally if you have registration on your vehicle then most all states require you to continue to have insurance coverage on the car, even if you are not operating it.

If you do not want to insure a vehicle in Terre Haute, IN and it is off the public highways then verify with your state what steps to take. It will usually include turning in your license plates and registration on the car. If this is done then you can take car insurance off of the car normally without receiving penalties.

To verify what your state’s laws are regarding this contact your Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Gary, IN

Indiana permits anyone generally to purchase a vehicle if they have the financial mean. If you are currently living in Gary Indiana you will need to register the car there as well.
I would like to know if a non-owner sr22 policy will work for me.

Aby

Indianapolis, IN

Thanks for asking, Aby.

You need to understand that an SR22 non-owner or named-operator liability policy is insurance on you for any vehicles you operate which is not yours. Normally, this type of liability policy is usually written with a state’s minimum coverage limits. It normally covers other drivers or property and not your own. If you were in an accident that was your fault, the liability insurance would normally cover only the injury to or property damage of others which occurred as a result of the accident. Take not that this insurance would not pay to fix the car you were driving nor your own injury.

So why is an SR22 filing needed? It can be attached to a NON-OWNER policy to satisfy the state’s requirements for license release. As such is the only option if you do not own a vehicle.

If you own a vehicle, you can still use the NON-OWNER policy to satisfy the state requirement before you may retrieve your license. Therefore, any insurance you would purchase in this case would have little chance of being used since its main purpose is discretion. Bear in mind that you can use a NON-OWNER policy to satisfy the state requirements and keep your existing insurance in place. There is no communication between the two insurance companies, and one policy will certainly not affect the other. You can keep the non-owner policy in force until the state’s time requirement is completed. Eventually you can cancel it and continue with your original, unaffected insurance.

The term NON-OWNER policy actually refers to the fact that there is no vehicle insured on it. It doesn’t really mean that you don’t own a vehicle or insure one on another policy.
