Reader’s Question:

I’m from Indiana, and I have a very old car I want repaired. Will my car insurer cover this?

Jerry

Anderson, IN

Auto insurance is mandatory in all states. The state of Indiana requires its motorists to have financial responsibility if they ever cause an accident. Motorists comply with this by purchasing auto insurance. Auto insurance is intended to protect the automobile and its occupants against the risks associated with the automobile’s normal use on the road.

Although auto insurance covers for repairs following an accident, provided that costs are within the limits stated in the policy, it does not cover expenses incurred from restoration and repair. An auto insurance company will only assist in paying if you carry auto repair insurance aside from the standard coverage. Many automobile owners, especially those who just bought their first one, are unaware of this type of insurance. Once your vehicle’s warranty expires, auto repair insurance is a safeguard to protect you from costly repairs.

Standard auto insurance has breakdown coverage. This means that the insurer is only liable to pay for repairs needed due to breakable parts. There is also wear and tear insurance, which covers for repairs necessitated by parts that deteriorate over time. However, not all companies cover wear and tear of cars with a standard auto repair policy, so you may need to purchase this from another company altogether. You can also shop around for an auto insurance company that covers both.

Before you get yourself auto repair insurance, be sure to know what is covered and how much you need to pay through deductibles. This is because you may still receive coverage on automobiles that have done less than 100,000 miles even if your auto manufacturer’s warranty has expired.

Reader’s Question:

We are from Elkhart, Indiana. My daughter is about to turn sixteen. She has never taken any driver education course and doesn’t have a learners permit. Can she still get her drivers license when she turns sixteen?

Dana

Elkhart, IN

You cannot obtain a license at just sixteen years of age in Elkhart, Indiana, you must have a learner’s permit first. Once your daughter have carried the learners permit for a certain amount of time she can apply for a driver’s license. If your daughter carries only a learner’s permit then she would have to wait until he is at least sixteen years old and 180 days old to obtain a driver’s license. If she would have started with an education learner’s permit then she could apply for a driver’s license when she is at least sixteen years and thirty days old.

To get more information about the licensing process in the state of Indiana you may contact the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Make certain that when your daughter does start driving with a permit that you tell your insurance provider. Many insurers will allow you to wait until she is fully licensed to add her as a driver to the insurance policy but insurance guidelines differ and you will want to be certain that she is covered by your auto insurance when driving.

Reader’s Question:

How many years do moving violations remain on your driving record in Anderson, Indiana?

Frances

Anderson, IN

The state of Indiana assesses point values to different traffic violations. These points can range from two points to eight points depending on the seriousness of the infraction. Points are then place onto your driving record and stay active for 2 years from the conviction date of the violation.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) the points may be disregarded after 2 years but the infractions stay on your motor vehicle record since IN state continues to track your infractions. If they find you have committed repeat traffic violations over a ten year period, Indiana will classify you as a habitual traffic offender. The Habitual Traffic Violator law for repeat violators provides for suspension of license of 5 years, 10 years, or life.
